Polybutylene is a type of plastic resin thought to be durable and long-lasting. However, over time, it was discovered that polybutylene pipes were prone to premature failure and deterioration, leading to leaks and water damage in many homes.
Some of the main issues with polybutylene pipes included:

- Exposure to sunlight contributed to premature deterioration.
- As polybutylene pipes age, they can develop small cracks or fractures, growing over time and leading to leaks.
In Australia, polybutylene pipes were primarily used for hot water systems and underground water mains rather than widespread interior plumbing. The use of polybutylene pipes in Australia was largely phased out by the late 1990s.
