Safe Guard Your Water With Backflow Prevention

Backflow Prevention Testing

Don’t let dirty water play spoilsport! Protect your home or commercial premises clean water supply with a backflow prevention device. These devices stop used or stored water from sneaking back into your water supply system.

Every year, backflow valves need a check-up, and that’s where we come in. Our Drain Defenders team are the pros in backflow prevention testing. We replace old backflow devices, conduct yearly tests, and report the results straight to the Council. All this by our licensed plumbers who know their craft!

Why You Might Need a Backflow Prevention Device

Here are a few reasons you might need a backflow prevention device:

1
Irrigation Systems
They could contaminate your water. Contaminants like fertilizers, pesticides, or animal waste could slip into your water during a backflow. You need a backflow prevention device if you have a lawn sprinkler or other irrigation.
2
Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs
The chemicals you use to keep your pool sparkly could harm you if they get into your drinking water. A backflow prevention device keeps them where they belong—in your pool!
3
Fire Sprinkler Systems
These systems store water for long periods and could get contaminated. Sometimes they’re treated with anti-freeze. You don’t want that in your drinking water! A backflow preventer makes sure it doesn’t happen.
4
Boilers
Many heating systems mix water with anti-freeze or corrosion inhibitors. A backflow preventer ensures these chemicals don’t enter your drinking water.
5
Commercial and Industrial Applications
Businesses often have special plumbing needs and use chemicals. These could contaminate a water supply during a backflow. In such cases, a backflow preventer is not just good—it’s a must-have for public health.
6
Multi-story Buildings
In these buildings, gravity can push back water in the plumbing system. If water pressure drops suddenly, dirty water from higher floors could enter the clean water supply. A backflow prevention device stops that from happening.
7
Rainwater Tanks
We make sure your rainwater supply and the mains water supply don’t mix. This is important if the mains pressure drops, leading to potentially contaminated rainwater flowing into the mains supply.

Remember, installing a backflow prevention device is only the start. To keep your water safe, you need regular checks and upkeep.

Why Backflow Prevention is Critical

Backflow prevention devices are an important part of any plumbing system. They’re designed to protect your water supply, ensuring your drinking water remains safe and uncontaminated.

In an ideal world, these devices would be a one-time installation, safeguarding your water indefinitely. However, like any mechanical device, wear and tear, and the potential for hidden faults mean regular testing is a must.

Backflow Prevention Testing - Essential Annually

By scheduling regular checks, you’ll ensure that your backflow prevention system is in excellent condition and functioning as it should.

An annual test by a certified professional, like Drain Defenders, ensures your system meets the Australian Standards (AS 2845.3) and local government requirements but also gives you peace of mind knowing that your water supply is protected.

FAQ's

Why Do I Need a Backflow Prevention System?

A backflow prevention system protects the main water supply from dirty water flowing back due to backflow. This could pose serious health risks, so backflow prevention testing is essential.

The Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 requires owners of testable backflow prevention devices to register the device with the local government and have it tested annually by a certified plumber.

When you receive Council’s Annual Registration and Testing Reminder Notice, arrange to pay the fee by the due date. Then, during that calendar year, arrange for the testing of the devices and reporting of the results to Council. This requires hiring a licensed backflow testing service like Drain Defenders. The licensed contractor will submit the test results to Council as required by state legislation.
